As
you approach the first hole, a par four dogleg left, the elevated
tee will give you a stunning, wide open vista that allows
beautiful views of the first green and parts of several other
holes. When you watch your ball sailing out into the generous
fairway, you’ll know why Apple Valley has no real competition
in the area.
Prepare
yourself for the delightful challenge of the par three fifth
hole, ranked the favorite par three in Central Ohio by readers
of Mid Ohio Golfer. Deceptively simple in terms of yardage,
this 140 yard hole is approached over a lake from an elevated
tee, and the green is flanked by bunkers, barnstones and majestic
pines. Mark Mickley, director of golf, rates this hole as
one of the most rewarding holes on the course. Hit it well,
and you‘re looking at a birdie. If you raise your head you
better get your scuba gear if you want your ball back. Remember,
fortune favors the bold.
According
to Mickley, the eighth hole is probably the toughest. With
a fairway that slopes toward the rough and trees on the right
side and a slightly down hill dogleg right at about 150 yards,
you’d better be wearing your game face when you tackle this
beginning of the stretch of holes through number eleven of
what some golfers call the Amen Corner of Apple Valley.
The
abundance of spacious landing areas will entice golfers of
all levels to hammer the ball from the one of Apple Valley’s
four tees that best suits their game. The generous fairways
are intoxicating, but don’t let them lull you to sleep, because
holes eight through eleven will require you to rise to the
occasion. Towering trees loom on all of these holes, and water
guards the approach to the eleventh green. Careful precision
is vital, or you’ll be in the woods or in the drink.
Once
you’ve made it, you’ll be rewarded with gently sloping greens
that are lightning fast. You won’t face
many bunkers on the fairways, but nearly all the greens are
protected by a variety of traps that range from deep faced
to puttable. Once the hurdles are cleared, the open entrances
that most of our greens have allow for a variety of run-up
shots that will please aggressive and cautious golfers alike.
Open from April until November 1st, you’ll always find Apple
Valley impeccably groomed and cared for like a beloved child.
Spring can find some wet conditions, but Mickley and his staff
nurture the course so well you won’t be bothered. Summers
are beautiful and fall brings views and weather that are worth
the green fees in and of themselves. If you haven’t played
Apple Valley, you’re doing yourself a great disservice. Play
Apple Valley and you’re playing golf.
